CSCS offers two types of allocations for Piz Daint.

Production projects
- Aim: production work for a specific scientific project.
- Submission is possible at any time
- Two allocation periods per year:
- Starting on April 1st (submission until October of the previous year)
- Starting on October 1st (submission until May)
- Projects are granted access based on scientific merit and technical feasibility.
- Allocations are valid for one year.
- Eligibility: No restriction with respect to affiliation or nationality. Proposers must hold at least the position of post-doc within their institution.

Development projects
- Aim: work on codes and algorithms.
- Submission is possible at any time
- Large development proposals:
- More than 36,000 core-hours per year for up to 3 years
- Two allocation periods per year:
- Starting on April 1st (submission until October of the previous year)
- Starting on October 1st (submission until May)
- Granted based on scientific merit and technical feasibility
- Small development projects:
- Less than 36,000 core-hours for up to 1 year
- Continuous submission without fix allocation periods.
- Granted based on technical and feasibility assessment.
